Supplementation Guidelines

Each level scoopful of Cell-Vital provides 40 grams (LARGE END) and 15 grams (SMALL END) of the double ended scoop.

Flexible dose rates with just 20 grams needed for a light to moderate horse fed a common plain ration.  Horses in moderate to intense work or with very limited hard feed can be fed up to 40 grams per day as one simple scoop.  Full supplementation guidelines are available on the label.

For resting, light work or maintenance give 20 grams daily for adult horses (500 kg body weight).  For moderate to heavily work horses, give 30 grams daily, for intense work including racing and high performance horses, give 40 grams daily.  For adult ponies and galloways at rest or in light work, give 10 grams daily, for regular moderate work, give 15 grams daily.

Doses can be scaled when feeding less than the recommended level of commercial, complete feeds.   For example, if you are feeding a lightly worked horse 2 kg of a common commercial feed but the directions from the manufacturer recommend feeding 4 kg per horse per day, add 10 grams of Cell-Vital to make up possible nutrient shortfalls without adding extra energy or fizziness to the ration.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I tell if my horse is lacking important vitamins and minerals?
A dull dry coat, a ‘washed-out’ looking coat, lack of colour intensity and shine, as well as reduced training and general tiredness, lack of stamina and poor performance are the most common signs that your horse needs extra vitamins and trace-minerals in their diet.  Most working horses require a ration-balancer, especially if they are not fed the full amount of a commercial or ‘complete’ feed.  Even then, due to the cooking process of the commercial feed, many ready-mixed feeds have reduced potency of essential vitamins which are important for the health, wellbeing and vitality of your horse.

Feeding your horse a small dose of Cell-Vital each day helps to meet their requirements for micronutrients, as potent and stable trace-minerals and vitamins in top-quality forms that are easy to absorb and digest.  Cell-Vital is concentrated ration balancer with an economical and cost-effective price.

Which horses are most suited to Cell-Vital?
All horses can be supplemented with Cell-Vital!  Cell-Vital is a broad-spectrum supplement for all types and exercise levels of horses, including those in racing, performance, equestrian or pleasure riding disciplines.  Cell-Vital is perfect for owners of multiple horses at different stages of training, as it suits all types of horses.

Cell-Vital is particularly suitable to horses fed lucerne-based rations, where lucerne hay or chaff is provided at 2 kg or more per day (for a 500 kg horse).  As lucerne contributes good quality bone minerals (calcium, phosphorus, magnesium) to the ration, Cell-Vital provides all the essential trace-minerals and vitamins, thus balancing the diet for most resting or lightly worked horses.

The dose rate is flexible and varied between resting, lightly worked to intensely worked horses and ponies, from 10 grams to 40 grams per day. A double ended scoop is provided to allow accurate and easy feed prep!

Cell-Vital is also an economical and easy to feed supplement for spelling horses to maintain adequate nutrient intake, can be mixed into communal feeders as required or in a bulk feed mix.

Cell-Vital is a recommended supplement even when feeding prepared, commercial feeds to counteract nutrient losses from cooking, extruding or micronization, as a ‘top-up’ dose, especially when the amount of the bagged feed is reduced from the recommended rate.

Why is the dose rate of Cell-Vital smaller when compared to Cell-Provide and Kohnke’s Own Cell-Perform?
Cell-Vital is highly concentrated!  Cell-Vital contains all essential trace-minerals and vitamins without frills or extras that may be supplied in the horses’ diet already.  Cell-Vital was formulated to mix with common diets given to working horses, which may be fed lucerne hay or a pelleted pre-mix feed.  As Cell-Vital has a smaller daily dose, it is highly economical with more days supply than other supplements of the same pack size!

Cell-Provide has a slightly higher supplementation rate because it provides extra bone minerals, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium.  Cell-Provide is recommended for resting horses which are just grazing, lightly worked horses on simple ‘pony pellet’ feeds or aged horses which need extra minerals for bone health in retirement.

Kohnke’s Own Cell-Perform is our premium ration balancer especially formulated with 5 different pellets that include extra bone minerals and antioxidants to ensure top muscle function for equestrian horses which are training and competing regularly.  These horses require higher levels of specific muscle nutrients to ensure optimum vitality and performance for impulsion, strength and stamina.

Why doesn’t Cell-Vital contain bone minerals?
Cell-Vital actually does contain important bone minerals such as calcium and phosphorus, however, it does not include a separate pellet of these nutrients because it is formulated to be fed to horses with a supply of bone minerals from their diet.  For example, horses which are fed lucerne-based rations, where lucerne hay or chaff is provided at 2 kg or more per day (for a 500 kg horse).  Lucerne contributes good quality bone minerals (calcium, phosphorus, magnesium) to the ration and then Cell-Vital provides all the essential trace-minerals and vitamins, thus balancing the diet for most resting or lightly worked horses.

Cell-Vital is also an excellent choice of ration balancing supplement for use with specialist supplements such as Cal-XTRA for horses grazing tropical grass pastures with setaria, buffel, green panic and kikuyu.  For these regions, Cell-Vital is provided to the horse daily for normal micronutrient needs, and the Cal-XTRA is given at higher amounts when the oxalate-containing grasses are growing rapidly, and then reduced in winter when these C4 grasses are only slowly growing.  This way, the best economy and balance can be achieved all year round!

Is Cell-Vital good for young horses?
We recommend Kohnke’s Own Cell-Grow for growing horses up to 2 years of age.  However, Cell-Vital is beneficial for specialist needs.  Cell-Vital can be used as a concentrated supplement in combination with Cal-XTRA to ensure longer limb growth in young horses from 24 month of age up to 36 months of age when inadequate height could negatively affect future sporting success.  Often these horses have had growth setbacks that impact the formation of long upper limbs, limiting robust movement and good paces.  Contact Kohnke’s Own for a informative factsheet which explains how to use these supplements to ensure long and strong limbs in young performance horses.
Why is it important to include a trace-mineral and vitamin supplement in my horse’s diet?
Many Australian soil regions are known to be deficient in certain trace-minerals which are critical for horse health and vitality, including selenium, copper and zinc.  Hay and grains grown in these regions, which are the main crop production areas in Australia, may then be low in these important nutrients.  Cell-Vital includes premium, organic chelated forms of these nutrients to ensure optimum intake in the digestive system for the best benefits to health and vitality.

Cell-Vital replaces nutrient losses common during processing and storage of grains, chaff, hay or prepared feeds to correct low or inadequate natural content.  For example, vitamins A and E decrease during the hay curing process, so Cell-Vital adds these nutrients to ensure optimum health and vitality in resting and working horses.

Cell-Vital has the exclusive Supplet® technology, with a blend of 2 separate pellets of trace-minerals and vitamins to avoid common detrimental interactions between these essential nutrients.  Ensures optimum potency and stability of the supplement, particularly important for sensitive vitamins.  The Supplets in Cell-Vital are highly palatable miniature pellets which also reduce wastage from sift-out, dust, blow-away or sludging in feeders.

If I feed a commercial bagged feed, do I need to feed Cell-Vital?
Cell-Vital is a perfect top-up supplement when feeding a cooked, extruded or pelleted hard feed to boost nutrient levels with extra high potency, cold-pressed trace-minerals and vitamins.  Commercial feeds are cooked by extrusion or micronization is a high-heat process which can destroy sensitive vitamins.

Single pellet feeds and powdered supplements also cause interactions between reactive trace-minerals and vitamins, destroying their potency and benefit to the horse.  A top-up of half a dose of Cell-Vital ensures that your horse is provided with all the important micronutrients needed for health and performance, even when using a ‘complete’ feed.

Often, the recommended dipper amount of a commercial pellet or muesli is not provided in the feed due to excess energy or economy, or multiple brands are used in small amounts each.   These commercial ready-mixed or ‘complete’ feeds are only designed to ensure a properly balanced diet when the full amount is given each day, often 5 kg (10 dippers) of feed!  A small ‘top-up’ dose of Cell-Vital provides stable, additional micronutrient intake without adding grain, sugar, fat or protein for sensitive horses which may gain weight or exhibit fizziness when fed the full amount of hard feed.

Will Cell-Vital make my horse ‘fizzy’ or ‘hot’?
No, Cell-Vital does not supply energy, sugar or protein which may need to be restricted in sensitive horses that become hot or fizzy on certain feeds or supplements.  For example, most other brands of ration-balancers contain a lot of fillers, but Cell-Vital is a concentrated supplement with a low dose rate – no fillers, extra energy or sugar!
What else do I need to add to my horse’s ration?
Cell-Vital doesn’t contain salts, as these would affect the potency and stability of the supplement (salts oxidise sensitive vitamins).  Salt and electrolyte mixes are also best added relative to the sweat level of the horse.  Most working horses sweat in moderate to significant amounts in response to training, usually more in hot weather.  A great salt mix which contains all critical electrolytes is Kohnke’s Own Cell-Salts (or Troppo-Salts for horses in hot and very humid regions).  Follow directions on the pack as a guide to tailor the salt amount to the sweat level of your horse during each season.

Some horses, especially those grazing oxalate containing C4 grasses, will need extra calcium and other bone minerals, thus we recommend these horses are provided with Kohnke’s Own Cal-XTRA, as a high potency bone mineral supplement which can be combined with Cell-Vital during the seasons where oxalate grasses are plentiful and growing rapidly.

How long will it take to see the benefits of Cell-Vital?
Many horse owners notice the depth and intensity of coat colour improving after 4 weeks of Cell-Vital supplementation.  Cell-Vital is particularly good at ensuring good coat colour and intensity, with visible results in the dapples and health of the horse! Farriers often notice Cell-Vital improving the condition and strength of normal hooves in 12 weeks.
Can I feed Cell-Vital in one feed?
Yes, for most working horses given between 10 grams and 30 grams of Cell-Vital, you can provide it in one feed daily.    If the horse is given 40 grams or more of Cell-Vital (ie for racehorses and high performance horses), the dose can be split between morning and evening feeds to ensure the best absorption of all the nutrients.
Does Cell-Vital contain any banned substances?
Cell-Vital does not swab and is completely legal to be fed to all performance horses in FEI competitions.

For use in racehorses, we recommend that you follow local guidelines on use of any supplements prior to race day. Cell-Vital contains some added cobalt for horse health, which may not be suitable for racing horses. Kohnke’s Own Cell-Vital Premium has no added cobalt and is recommended for racehorses on high cobalt feeds.
